GAIA’S GARDEN
Activism and reclaiming the city
Heat maps were the inspiration for the backdrop of this piece. The viewer is instantly captured by the bright colours and this draws them closer to the visual. However, the details lie in the statistics overlaying the imagery.
The lack of context of the figures responds to the general shortfall in knowledge or ignorance on the climate crisis and the collateral lack of urgency surrounding the importance of sustainability. To an extent there is a disassociation with this crisis in our daily lives in the U.K.
The volunteers who contributed statistics to this piece are individually aware of the alarming context of their figures, but to a general onlooker, much like in reality, they are meaningless and overseen.
Thus, the artwork aims to bring awareness to these issues and open a conversation on what can be done to increase actions towards sustainable practice.
